Resumen

“Las chivas” are a particular mode of transport in rural areas of Colombia. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, a truck chassis of them were installed wooden bodywork, adapted in this way to transport people, equipment and even some farm animals. The craftsmanship of the bodywork is accompanied by a laborious painting: landscapes, geometric shapes, religious imagery with a profusion of colors. Music makes a fundamental part of that kind of transportation; musicians and their instruments traveled in these buses across the region, is not unusual that they played and sang while the car moved slowly along the country roads. This is an important cultural link between this kind of vehicles with popular music. The accelerate process of urbanization in Colombia has led to drastic changes in the meanings of symbols and cultural practices. “Las chivas” have not disappeared; have been incorporated into the cultural dynamics of cities. Urban populations in Colombia, most of whom have rural origin due to large migration processes have changed their relationship with “las chivas”. Now used as a "nightclub in motion." The old wooden buses are refurbished with sound and lighting equipment to be rented by groups of people from a very diverse social condition, to enjoy a party that moves through different areas of the city. This transit space and dance party thanks to the automotive mobility implies a kind of extended movement. The thin limit between this practice and traffic rules seem to be reconciled in some widely accepted to justify the party dancing and even at some risk. Cultural new meaning of “las chivas” in this context expresses one of the many forms of transit between urban and rural culture in Colombia.
